CLM Took an Active Part in Community Construction and was Highly Appraised

The enterprise invested by our Company - CNMC Luanshya Copper Mining PLC (CLM) - has always been fulfilling its social responsibility as one of the Company's core values. The Company has made a great deal of efforts in cholera prevention and control and other public health and infrastructure construction, and was highly appraised by local government and the public in the community.

Health Care

In October 2017, CLM, which concerned about the health and safety of all people in the community, partnered with the local health authority and the Luanshya District Health Management Team to run various health programs aimed at preventing the outbreak of cholera in the district. 


In order to eliminate the hidden danger of the epidemic situation within the community, the Company continued to invest with lots of money in maintaining the proper operation of the Mine Hospital as well as three community clinics, and also provided the miner's family and the public in the community with medical and health care service; meanwhile, the Company arranged personnel carrying tools and equipment to clear the historical waste from the Central Business District, Mikomfwa, Roan and Mpatamato townships. An estimated 5,000 tons of waste was collected and disposed of over a period of one month. The Company also provided vehicle guarantee service for the medical inspection teams of local sanitation authority in response to the request of the municipality. 


In addition, the Company would make budgets each year and participate actively in preventing against malaria, AIDS programs.

 

Public Infrastructure

Following the outbreak of fires that saw a number of markets burnt up across the country in autumn and winter of 2017, the government initiated a program to rebuild better markets to replace the burnt ones. CLM was approached by government through the Office of the Vice President to help with this noble cause. The Company decided to donate K40, 000.00 to go towards the rebuilding project.


In November of 2017,Luanshya rained heavily after entering into rainy seasons, resulting in soaring of water level in Luanshya River and damages to the bridge on the only road connecting the central business district and Roan as well as Mpatamato townships, thus the vehicles could not pass through. After the Company's executives knew such news, the Company contacted the local authority immediately to ensure that a bypass detour was provided for tens of thousands of residents in these two villages whose work and life were seriously affected. Subsequently, the Company assigned capable and vigorous constructors driving the machinery and equipment to the construction sites, and through hardwork overnight, the constructors partnered with the Luanshya Municipal government to ensure that the road was quickly repaired but also provided a temporal route to ensure that business continued as normal. Such social public welfare actions were highly appraised and acclaimed by local government as well as a great deal of people in the community. 

 

Sports


In order to support the local junior sports, CLM has continued to sponsor Roan United Football Club with an annual budget of US$ 160,000 according to the annual budget arrangement, with the purpose of helping the club in Zambian League to improve the performance of the team.

The Company continued engaging various national sports associations with a view of entering into partnership in the running of sports infrastructure in the CLM sports complex. So far, a memorandum of understanding has already been signed with the Zambia Cricket Union while negotiations have already commenced with the Zambia Tennis Association.  Through cooperation with various athletic associations, the Company was designated to revamp the dilapidated sporting infrastructure for the benefit of the community.
 

 

Agricultural and Cultural Support

For the purpose of supporting small-scale farmers in Luanshya District, the Company donated 200 bags of seeds and fertilizer(amounted K50,000)at sowing season to local farmers as a annual plan. The programme was implemented through the office of the District Agriculture Coordinating Office (DACO) and the Mayor of Luanshya. Meanwhile, the follow-up meetings were regularly held to see how the farmers utilize the farming implements, and review the implementation of the project.


During the period under review, CLM partnered with His Royal Highness Chief Kalunkumya of the Lamba speaking people in Mpongwe and held the Ukusoomona Traditional ceremony successfully. The ceremony was presided over by Kalunkumya and held on Saturday 21st October at Nkanga hill.


As a good community resident, CLM also made several donations to various public institutions and government departments, and promoted the community construction comprehensively.

                                                                                             The medical staff from Luanshya Mine Hospital took part in the activities organized by health department of local government, and disseminated knowledge on AIDS prevention.
