During 22nd to 23rd, June (local time in Zambia), considering the actual production conditions currently inside the Company, CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines PLC (hereinafter referred to as CLM) initiated the “work safety month” activity closely focusing on the purpose of “strengthening the safety awareness and improving the safety quality”, through which all the employees were required to make contributions on their own posts to the quality improvement, efficiency enhancement and loss reduction. In this activity, a welder technical contest was organized among all the Chinese and Zambian employees in the mechanical repair shop of Muliashi Hydrometallurgical Plant, aiming at improving the safe operation skills of Zambian employees and realizing a great leap forward in terms of the maintenance quality and work safety management.
After the elaborate plan over half a month, the activity group not only developed the specific schedule of technical contest, but also prepared sufficient welding tools and specified related technical requirements and evaluation rules. (1) Welding method: Vertical welding at low position; (2) Quality requirements: One-sided welding and double-sided forming through once complete penetration, with regular, even and full fish scale on the welding surface, no slag inclusion, pores or undercut and the weld height controlled within 3 mm.
More than 20 Zambian welders, who have previously mastered the technical essentials and evaluation criteria of the contest under the technical demonstration and guidance of Chinese welder Hu Jianhong, participated in this fierce technical contest over 2 days. 6 of them, including Chanda Kapembwa Andrew, Mukwala Victor, Kunda Edson, Mutale Cletus, Phiri Peter and Chilongo Naphtaly, stood out from the competition, and finally won the first, second and third prizes as the TOP 6 and additionally obtained the material incentive from the activity group.
This technical contest was the first vocational skill competition among Chinese and Zambian employees in CNMC Luanshya Muliashi Hydrometallurgical Plant, which not only prompted Zambian technical workers to enhance the work safety awareness, but also created a good atmosphere of technical completion, learning, overtaking and assistance for Zambian employees in other workshops to advance skills in all respects.
Wang Jingjun, the Deputy General Manager of CLM, spoke highly of this technical contest held in the mechanical repair shop of Muliashi Hydrometallurgical Plant, as he pointed that: “According to the actual production conditions, Muliashi Hydrometallurgical Plant organized employees to actively developed a technical contest focusing on the technical learning, proficiency enabling, first quality creation and contribution comparison, which, with all Chinese leading and Zambian learning employees participated under the company leadership based upon the combination of learning and practice, played an active and exemplary role among Zambian employees, improved safe operation skills of all employees at work and established a good environment of work safety for the Company’s production operation and quality and efficiency improvement.”
He further expressed requirements on all Chinese and Zambian employees as follows: Firstly, try to promote the quality and efficiency improvement by incessantly raising the awareness, actively assuming responsibilities and daring to sacrifice own interests for CLM development; secondly, make contributions on own posts to the loss reduction by positively facing the pressure of maintaining growth and striving to create a good atmosphere of hard working and cooperation in harmony with the spirit of devotion and strong confidence in development kept in mind.
